Rebiya Kadeer, a successful and charismatic
businesswoman from northwestern China, was arrested
while traveling to a meeting to discuss human
rights concerns with delegates from the U.S.
Congressional Research Service in August 1999.  Before
her arrest, she had made significant
contributions to securing women's rights in China and
had founded the "Thousand Mothers Movement" to promote
employment for Uighur women. Ms. Kadeer was released
from prison on March 17, 2005.
