Online Holiday Spending Strong But Still Not Enough

Despite the fact that this holiday season has seen several $800-plus million shopping days, analysts say it won't be enough to save the U.S. retail sector from the down economy and a compressed holiday shopping schedule.

According to market research firm comScore, holiday e-commerce this year
is down about one percent from the 2007 season with more than $24 billion spent online so far. This year's Cyber Monday on Dec. 1, on the other hand, outpaced last year's day with $12.8 billion in e-commerce spending compared to $12.7 billion last year.

"With five fewer days of holiday
shopping between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, there is increasing pressure on consumers to make their holiday purchases in time for Christmas," said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. "As a result, we've seen online shoppers continue to spend heavily even later into the season, with the most
recent week including four of the top ten spending days of the season. Despite this positive development, the combination of the compressed holiday schedule and the challenging economic situation faced by many consumers means that retailers have their work cut out for them this season."

Roku Now Supporting Netflix HD

The Roku Digital Video Player, the original direct-to-TV Netflix streaming device, on Monday announced support for the red envolope company's new high-def content lineup.

The news comes in the form of a free software update scheduled to be delivered to Roku customers in the next few weeks.
The update will work with all existing Roku players.

“Netflix is a pioneer in streaming HD content over the Internet and the results are impressive,” said Anthony Wood, Roku CEO. “Adding hundreds of HD titles to their catalog of more than 12,000 streaming titles provides tremendous value to
Roku owners.”

According to Roku, additional HD content providers are expected in the first quarter.

More holiday cheer from our friends in the market research community.

According to TNS Retail Forward's year-end forecast, retail sales will remain soft through next year and won't officially turn around until 2010. In 2009, retail sales are expected to grow by about two percent, compared to
the 2.3 percent growth rate in 2008. Based on the U.S. Department of Commerce's data, TNS said, sale growth won't approach the 10-year average of five percent until 2010 through 2013.

Not exactly a lump of coal, but it's close.
