Struts
------
http://struts.apache.org
As old as the hills, but people still use it and rave on about it.
Maverick
--------
http://mav.sourceforge.net
A really simplified version of Struts, but apparently quite limited and can
cause serious blockages when things start getting complicated and you need
the flexibility of Struts
Java Server Faces
-----------------
http://java.sun.com/j2ee/javaserverfaces/index.jsp
People are raving on about it. Apparently, it comes with its own framework
engine. It's apparently also quite similar to the ASP.NET framework (but
like a Java Version) - looks like its going quite standards compliant, so I
think this would be a good one to look at.
Jetspeed II
-----------
http://portals.apache.org/jetspeed-2
More of a portal framework than a web framework, but hey, I guess if you can
easily code your own portals, then just put everything you need into a
portal. I think this is a good one if you're into less code, more web site.
Spring Framework
----------------
http://www.springframework.org
Apparently this framework kicks the 5h1+ out of struts, and is really
flexible, supports multiple views, uses inversion of control, etc. I found
it quite difficult, but people are really getting into it, so I'd recommend
taking a look. The tutorial is really simple, so it does make a complicated
thing seem much easier.
Otherwise, there is PHP
----------------------
There are a lot more web frameworks out there, but these are the ones I've
checked out. If you're not hell-bent on using java - I lost a little faith
in Java (for my simple applications) recently, there are some great PHP
frameworks out there - not as grand and wonderful as java, but certainly a
lot quicker, simpler and easy to implement. I saw they ported Maverick to
PHP and ASP.NET. The PHP version is called
http://amb.sourceforge.net/.
PHP-Nuke is the most widely used web framework in the world. You can put a
site with a guestbook, login, shopping basket, e-commerce system, chat, etc.
together in a few hours. Literally! Check
http://phpnuke.org/. I know the
Z-Logic folk really like smarty
http://smarty.php.net/ which is a templating
engine and there is interesting support for XMLC coming out too.
It really all depends on your applications. Other Java / PHP Folk, please
comment.
Thanks,
Mark
