I flagged this message but then got busy with work and never responded.

I picked up a powered Firewire hub and connect the device through that.
In that configuration, everything works fine.  I sucessfully upgraded
the iMac.  I didn't go through any of the other steps as at the time, I
had no other firewire devices I could try.

Unfortunately, I paid insufficient attention to the "recommendation" to
upgrade the firmware and now have a dead video board :-(
