Illustrator saving .ai files with PDF type code
by Matt Rosenberg

Hi all,

I'm seeing some strange behavior from Illustrator CS2 on 10.4.3
clients, and I'm not sure if I should blame Adobe or Apple (I think
Apple). It appears that Illustrator saves native Illustrator files
(.ai) with a type code of "PDF " (this may have been true in the
past, I have no idea). This is the same code that's used by Acrobat
for any PDF file.

When you save an Illustrator file for the first time, in Illustrator
format, it gets the proper extension but a PDF icon. If you open the
document in Illustrator, do a Save As, and overwrite the file, the
icon changes to one for Illustrator.

I checked the contents of the Illustrator.app package, and it appears
that Info.plist properly lists this type code, along with an icon
file that corresponds to an Illustrator file icon. So it seems like
the Finder is screwing up.

So: is there some way I can make the Finder get it right the first
time, and is this a bug that should be filed with Apple?

Thanks,
Matt
