Greetings fellow listers! Last week I upgraded a customer to the
following server and client configurations. Note that all users'
homes are network-based.
Xserve G4
MOSXS v.10.4.3 w/all latest patches & Kerberized services installed
on RAID 1+0 (four internal ATA drives)
DNS (for internal resolution on the VLAN)
AFP
NetBoot/NetInstall
Open Directory master (LDAPv3)
Workstations (400MHz AGP G4's to 1GHz eMacs)
MOSX v.10.4.3 w/all latest patches
bound statically to LDAPv3 via Directory Access
MS Office 2004 SP2 w/all latest patches (even though they don't use
Entourage)
Other than the custom DNS configuration, the server is pretty
vanilla. All the workstations have one local admin-level account, and
all users' homes are located on the server. Everything is functioning
very well, except for MS Office 2004 (surprise!). Here's a sample of
the error messages users are getting from Word 2004:
"Word cannot complete the operation because too many files are open.
(AutoRecovery save of 'filename.doc')"
"Saving the AutoRecovery file is postponed for 'filename.doc'."
One user wrote: "While editing a document, the pointer suddenly
morphed into that little colorful and rotating disk indicating that
the computer is doing something ... and stayed there for sooooooo
long, that I had to force quit the program."
Has anyone else run across these sorts of problems, and if so, how
did you solve them? I receive this list in digest mode, so would love
direct replies to my message. TIA for your suggestions.
Ted Dively
